On a Monday, I enabled paid subscriptions on my Substack.
At that point, I had about 20 subscribers.
By that Wednesday, I had around 60 free subscribers.
And by Thursday…
I got my first paid subscriber!
Not months later and not after “building an audience.”
Three days.
However, this didn’t happen in isolation.
This came after building, and refining, my first real offer.
I created my signature workshop: From Unstuck to Published
And the first time I ran it…I had 2 attendees.
The second time? No one signed up.
The third time? 1 person.
And the fourth time, just three days ago on Saturday, I had 12 participants at $97!!
That progression taught me something most people never fully understand:
It wasn’t about the size of the audience.
It was about the clarity of the offer.
This wasn’t luck.
It wasn’t because I went viral or because I had a massive following.
It came down to one simple decision: I started with a clear paid offer.
Most People Do The Opposite
Average Substack writers and creators:
Start writing.
Try to grow an audience.
Wait until they feel “ready” to monetize.
And then wonder why nothing converts.
It’s because there’s no structure and no direction.
There’s no clear reason for someone to pay.
Here’s What I Did Differently
Before I even focused on growing the publication…
I built a clear, simple offer with a defined outcome.
Not vague and not “I’ll figure it out later.”
Clear.
The From Unstuck to Published Workshop had one job: Help people go from stuck → launching their Substack the right way from day one.
That clarity changed everything.
The Lesson I Learned
Substack isn’t just a place to write.
It’s a storefront.
And most people are opening the store…
Without putting anything on the shelves.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Instead of:
An Idea → Write → Grow → Maybe Monetize.
You need:
A Clear Outcome → Offer → Structure → Then Publish.
Here’s The Part Most People Don’t Understand
You don’t need a big audience to make money.
You need:
The right offer.
In front of the right people.
With a clear outcome.
A small, engaged list can outperform a large, unfocused one every time.
Let me show you exactly how to do this.
The Simple First Paid Subscriber Framework
Here’s exactly how to do this step-by-step:
Step 1: Start With One Clear Outcome
Not:
“I help people with writing.”
Think:
“Launch your first Substack.”
“Turn your ideas into a paid offer.”
“Create multiple income streams around your newsletter.”
Specific wins convert.
Step 2: Package It Into A Specific Offer
Not a massive course and definitely not something complicated.
Start with:
A workshop.
A blueprint or guide.
A short, focused product.
Something that solves one real problem.
Step 3: Build Your Publication Around That Outcome
Now your content has direction.
Every post:
Reinforces your positioning.
Attracts the right readers.
Leads naturally into your offer.
Step 4: Talk About Your Offer Like It Belongs
Don’t mention your offer like a random sales pitch.
Talk about it like:
“If you want help implementing this, here’s how we can work together.”
Be clean, natural, and expected.
Step 5: Layer In Paid Subscriptions
Layer in paid subscriptions, later.
Once people:
Understand your value.
Trust your perspective.
Have seen your work.
Know you show up.
Exactly What I Did To Get My First Paid Subscriber
I didn’t wait and I didn’t guess.
What I did was:
Built a clear offer.
Refined it through real launches.
Built the publication correctly.
Enabled paid early.
Gave people a reason to say yes.
And it worked; fast!
Why? Because everything was aligned:
The content.
The offer.
The outcome.
If you’re reading this and feeling stuck…
It’s probably not a motivation problem.
It’s not discipline and it’s not even consistency.
It’s lack of clarity.
What This Looks Like In Practice
Most people overcomplicate this.
So let’s make it simple.
If you were starting today, your only job would be:
Pick one outcome.
Build one offer.
Write in that direction.
That’s it.
A Real Example
Let’s say your outcome is:
“Help writers land their first ghostwriting client.”
Your setup could look like:
Free content:
Writing about outreach, positioning, mistakes, expertise.
Offer:
A $47–$97 product or workshop.
Paid Tier (Later):
Deeper breakdowns, templates, support.
Everything connects.
Why This Works
It works because you’re not guessing.
You’re also not hoping people eventually pay.
You’re building: a system that leads somewhere, right away.
If You Want to Implement This The Right Way
This is exactly why I created:
Build Your Substack the Right Way From Day One: A Beginner’s Blueprint To Go From Stuck → Published (The Right Way)
Inside, I break down:
The exact “Get Unstuck” framework.
How to position your publication correctly.
A clear first article structure.
A simple paywall strategy.
A no-fluff checklist.

If You’re Stuck Right Now
Most people delay monetization because they think they’re not ready.
But the truth is: They’re just not clear.
Once you’re clear… Everything moves faster.
You don’t need more time.
You don’t need more ideas.
You don’t need to wait.
You need to decide: What outcome do I help people get?
And build from there.
Thank you for being here. I truly appreciate you.

Move first. Refine second. Publish with structure.

The first time you publish a Substack article, something almost always happens.
When to Go Paid on Substack (Most Creators Get This Wrong)
“Most creators wait far too long to turn on paid. When in reality, they were ready much earlier than they thought.”

If you’re currently stuck starting your Substack, this is exactly the shift that changed everything for me.
Clarity first. Offer first. Then publish.
If you’re stuck starting, it’s usually not a motivation problem—it’s a clarity problem.
This shift changed everything for me.
