One of the most common mistakes I see from new creators is assuming they have a growth problem.

They think they need:

More subscribers
More Notes
More recommendations
More articles
More visibility

Sometimes that’s true.

Most of the time, it isn’t.

Most creators don’t have a growth problem.

They have a clarity problem.

→ A positioning problem.

→ A conversion problem.

→ A foundation problem.

Every week, I review Substack publications from creators who feel stuck.

→ Some have been publishing for months.

→ Some haven’t launched yet.

→ Some have hundreds of subscribers.

→ Others have fewer than ten.

Regardless of where they are in the journey, I find myself asking the same questions:

→ Can a reader understand this publication quickly?

→ Can they tell who it’s for?

→ Can they tell why it exists?

→ Can they tell why they should subscribe?

The creators who grow the fastest aren’t always the best writers.

They’re often the clearest.

Inside this article, I’m sharing the exact audit framework I use when reviewing client publications before launch.

→ Open your publication in another tab.

→ Work through each section honestly.

→ And pay attention to the areas where you hesitate.

Those are usually the places creating the most friction.

Section 1: First Impression Audit

This is where I start every audit.

Why?

Because readers don’t experience your publication the way you built it.

They experience it the way they discover it and most people decide how they feel about your publication before they ever read an article.

Ask yourself:

□ Who is this for?

□ What problem does it solve?

□ Why should I care?

□ What makes it different?

□ Do I understand it within 5 seconds?

If a reader has to work to understand your publication, most won’t.

They’ll leave.

Confused people don’t subscribe.

Most Common Mistakes

Trying to appeal to everyone.
Using vague language.
Leading with credentials instead of reader outcomes.
Making readers figure things out for themselves.

Section 2: Publication Name Audit

Many creators spend weeks, or months, obsessing over their publication name.

Others spend thirty seconds.

Neither extreme is helpful.

Your publication name doesn’t need to explain everything, but it should support your positioning.

Ask yourself:

□ Is the name memorable?

□ Is it easy to spell?

□ Is it easy to say out loud?

□ Does it align with the mission?

□ Is it broad enough to grow with me?

□ Would someone remember it tomorrow?

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is clarity and memorability.

Most Common Mistakes

Names that are too generic.
Names that are too clever.
Names that only make sense to the creator.
Names that lock the publication into a narrow topic forever.

Section 3: Publication Description Audit

If I could only fix one thing on many new publications, it would be this.

Most creators treat their publication description like a summary.

Readers treat it like a decision-making tool.

If this section isn’t clear, everything downstream becomes harder.

Ask yourself:

□ Does it clearly state who it’s for?

□ Does it communicate a benefit?

□ Does it explain the transformation?

□ Is it reader-focused instead of writer-focused?

□ Can someone understand it in one sentence?

□ Does it create curiosity?

A good description helps readers self-identify.

They should immediately think:

“This is for me.”

Most Common Mistakes

Talking about yourself.
Being too broad.
Using industry jargon.
Trying to explain everything.

Section 4: Profile Audit

One of the most common points of confusion on Substack is the difference between the creator and the publication.

→ Your profile helps people find you.

→ Your publication helps people understand what they’re subscribing to.

Both matter.

Ask yourself:

□ Is my profile name clear?

□ Can people easily find me?

□ Is my profile photo recognizable?

□ Does my bio support my publication?

□ Do my profile and publication feel connected?

Most Common Mistakes

Mismatched branding.
Generic bios.
No clear connection between creator and publication.
Confusing profile and publication names.

Section 5: About Page Audit

This is one of the biggest missed opportunities I see.

I’ve reviewed publications with strong ideas, solid writing, and consistent publishing habits.

Then I open the About page and immediately understand why subscriptions are slow.

The page never answers the reader’s biggest question:

“Why should I care?”

Ask yourself:

□ Is there a strong opening hook?

□ Have I clearly identified the reader’s problem?

□ Have I explained what the publication is?

□ Have I explained who it’s for?

□ Have I shared why I created it?

□ Have I established credibility?

□ Have I explained what subscribers receive?

□ Is there a clear call to action?

Your About page shouldn’t simply describe your publication.

It should help readers understand why it matters.

Most Common Mistakes

Starting with your biography.
Making the page entirely about you.
Forgetting the reader’s problem.
No reason to subscribe.
No call to action.

Section 6: Content Audit

A lot of creators think content is the growth strategy.

It’s not.

Content is the product.

If the product feels random, growth becomes much harder.

Ask yourself:

□ Do I have clear content pillars?

□ Do my articles support my mission?

□ Can readers predict what they’ll receive?

□ Does my content reinforce my positioning?

□ Am I building a publication instead of posting random articles?

The best publications feel cohesive.

Readers know what to expect.

Most Common Mistakes

Chasing random ideas.
Publishing without a strategy.
Writing for yourself instead of your audience.
Constantly changing direction.

Section 7: Paid Subscription Audit

This is where many creators accidentally make things more complicated than they need to be.

They focus on features.

Readers care about outcomes.

Ask yourself:

□ Is there a clear paid offer?

□ Do readers understand the value?

□ Is the outcome obvious?

□ Are the benefits meaningful?

□ Do the benefits focus on depth, access, or outcomes?

□ Would I personally pay for this?

A paid offer doesn’t need to be complicated.

It needs to be valuable.

Most Common Mistakes

Offering too much.
Offering too little.
No clear outcome.
Making readers guess the value.

Section 8: Subscriber Journey Audit

Almost nobody thinks about this early enough.

They focus on getting subscribers.

Not what happens after someone subscribes.

Ask yourself:

□ Do I have a welcome email?

□ Does it explain what to expect?

□ Do I have a Start Here page?

□ Can new readers easily find my best work?

□ Am I guiding readers toward the next step?

Every subscriber is beginning a relationship with your publication.

Don’t leave them wandering.

Most Common Mistakes

No onboarding process.
No welcome email.
No direction.
Assuming readers know where to start.

Section 9: Growth Audit

Growth matters, but growth amplifies whatever foundation already exists.

If the foundation is unclear, growth often amplifies confusion.

Ask yourself:

□ Are recommendations enabled?

□ Have I requested recommendations?

□ Am I using Notes consistently?

□ Am I engaging with other creators?

□ Am I making my work easy to share?

□ Am I focused on serving readers rather than chasing numbers?

Growth is often a byproduct of clarity; not a replacement for it.

Most Common Mistakes

Looking for shortcuts.
Obsessing over subscriber counts.
Ignoring relationships.
Expecting growth without visibility.

The Final Question

Before I finish every client audit, I ask one question.

It’s the same question I’ll leave you with.

If a stranger landed on your publication today, would they immediately understand why it exists and why they should subscribe?

Not eventually, not after reading five articles, and not after joining a webinar.

Immediately because every point of confusion creates friction.

And friction kills growth.

Final Thoughts

Most creators think they need more subscribers.

Most actually need a stronger foundation.

The good news?

Foundations are fixable.

→ You don’t need to publish more articles this week.

→ You don’t need another logo.

→ You don’t need another productivity system.

→ You need clarity because when your positioning is clear, your message is clear.

→ When your message is clear, your publication becomes easier to understand.

→ And when your publication becomes easier to understand, growth becomes easier too.

Before you focus on getting more people to your publication, make sure the experience they’re arriving to is worth subscribing to.

That’s where growth starts.

Thank you for being here. I truly appreciate you.
